Handmade Greeting Cards

These cards are made by women living on the Island of Marajo in the Northern State of Para, Brazil. The women meet four days a week for three hours each as part of a project called Mulheres Unidas (Women United), coordinated by the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur on the  Island .

This Project supports women, many of whom are single, who struggle for economic survival. Mulheres Unidas offers space for community, educative reflections and opportunities for learning new skills that can generate income.

The cards are made by hand with local resources. Each woman chooses the design of a card and adds her personal touch. All proceeds benefit the women. Thank you for giving value to their lives!  Pictures of more sample cards can be seen in the PoT Photo Gallery. Please select either five cards for $10 or ten cards for $20 from the PayPal drop down menu and click "Buy Now".  Then you can use either your PayPal account or pay with a credit card.  After your purchase Betty Kandler select the cards for you and will contact you. Each card is an individual work of art. The cards on the photos are only samples.

January 2012 ~ Newsletter
Letter from a Member of Parents of Tots

Hello Parents of Tots,

I remember the early days being home with my daughter and thinking what are we going to do tomorrow? It was about 3 years ago, I heard about Parents of Tots, PoT, and then decided to join. I did not know any other members at the time, but what I was looking for was some fun and new activities to do with my 2 children, Andie (5) and Millie (3). We moved here from NY, 6 years ago so I really wanted to explore and discover new things to do with my girls. Plus I wanted to meet more people.

Once I started going to PoT events, I got to know many familiar faces and made some new friends along the way. I loved the flexibility of PoT and being able to choose activities that worked for us. I was always impressed with how well organized the play dates, events and parties were. It felt good to be part of a group and to find many commonalities amongst the parents.

I slowly became more involved in PoT. I began by helping out on the Sunshine Committee, making meals when needed. I love to cook and help others so this has worked out great. Soon after I noticed in a newsletter that the North Suburban Child & Family Resources Network, NSCFRN, liaison position was open. The NSCFRN is a place dear to my heart. It is a wonderful place that has organized playgroups, a drop in play space and parent education classes. I cannot tell you how much this place became my saving grace after my first daughter was born. I would visit almost daily when she was a baby. This is where I met a great group of friends, some who were “transplants” like me. Kathy Harlow, the program director, and her amazing crew, always made me and every other parent feel at home and welcomed. When I saw this position open I jumped at the opportunity.

The NSCFRN liaison role gave me the chance to spend time with my younger daughter, Millie, and spend time at the NSCFRN to see old friends. I found I enjoyed the process of organizing the play group and seeing it through. It has been rewarding to lead my daughter and other children, singing, reading, and making a craft. I have been in this position over a year and now feel it is time for a change.  I am becoming more involved in my older daughters’ school and other community events. So I thought about some friends of mine who I thought would enjoy and do well with this position. My friend Gosia Janik came to mind as she is caring, insightful and patient. She is a new member of Parents of Tots and I believe she will receive many benefits from this group and position just as I did. Thank you all for coming to my play groups and please welcome Gosia into this fun position.  Our next NSCFRN play group will be Wednesday January 5, 2012 at 10am! (check out page 7 for details) Hope to see you there.  Happy New Year!

Stay warm,
